Bristol Waste Company is your local recycling, waste collection and street cleansing company; delivering a reliable and responsible service to the city.
We believe waste is a valuable resource and strive to transform the way it’s perceived. By working with residents and communities we want to minimise or prevent the amount of waste generated and encourage everyone to repair, reuse or recycle the waste they generate.
That’s why when we discovered the average black wheelie bin in Bristol was nearly a quarter full of food – with households wasting an average of £60 of food a month – we knew we had to do something and launched the multi-award-winning ‘Slim My Waste – Feed My Face’ campaign.
This on-going, playful campaign encourages residents to recycle their food waste rather than binning it, and reduce the amount of food going to waste in the first place. The results so far show that the campaign is really changing residents’ behaviours with a 16% increase in the amount of food waste collected in the month following its launch.
The food waste diverted from the black bins goes on to generate power; saving money for the city, creating energy and helping the planet too. However, we also hope the campaign will highlight to residents how much food they waste and encourage them to reduce it.
That is why we are so proud to be sponsoring this award and the ingenious and worthwhile work these two young women are doing which could support our work to reduce food waste.
